Arroyo Trabuco
Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club: Bordering alongside Trabuco Creek (Arroyo Trabuco in Spanish), this very natural golf course is laid out in the gently rolling, west facing foothills of the Santa Ana mountain range.
With real estate development prohibited in this area, the surrounding environment provides a wonderfully natural setting for this out-and-back Tom Lehman design; it also provides a home for a multitude of southern California flora and fauna, including mountain lions and rattlesnakes (not dangerous unless YOU provoke THEM).
The layout takes you quickly into open, rolling hills, with good-width fairways flanked by an array of long grasses, bushes and small trees. The most scenic stretch, from the par-5 7th through to the par-5 12th occupies wonderfully open, undulating terrain, where plenty of elevation changes add to character of the holes. Particularly attractive are the 10th, 11th and 12th, which lead you through a ruggedly picturesque canyon, deep in the hills.
Water makes its first telling appearance at the attractive par-3 13th, where a tee-to-green carry over a small lake is required (perhaps modelled on the renowned 17th of Kiawah Island's Ocean course ?). The closing duo are dangerously threatened by the same small lake that runs from tee-to-green up the leftside of the long par-4 17th and par-5 18th; definitely a concern for habitual hookers of the ball.
Clearly a fan of links golf, Lehman has provided many short, grassy run-off areas around the often large and undulating greens, perfect to hone your chip-and-run game.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Walking permitted.

The golf course is laid out in the western foothills of the Santa Ana mountain range, which separates Orange County from neighbouring Riverside County. The nearby town of Mission Viejo is one of the largest master planned communities ever built as a single project in the United States. The city's name is a reference to Rancho Mission Viejo, a large Spanish land grant from which the community was founded. There is no Spanish mission in Mission Viejo.
On the other side of the Creek from the golf course you will see Saddleback College. Enrolling over 25,000 students each semester, this two-year post-secondary institute of higher education has served South Orange County since 1968.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
