Eagle Ridge Golf Club: At just over 7,000 yards from the tips and with several tight and testing holes, this Johnny Miller designed golf course will ensure your game is given an excellent workout.
Located at the southern end of the Santa Clara Valley and bordering the foothills of the Santa Cruz range, you will enjoy picturesque views onto wooded hills, and vistas across the valley, especially from the layout's higher elevations on the more undulating back-nine. Most of the course retains a pleasantly natural feel, even where some holes are flanked on one side by housing.
The front-nine loop introduces many of its defences right from the start: expansive and stylish bunkering, wide creeks (often tree or bush filled) to be crossed en route to seriously undulating greens, and a few unnervingly tight drives to make, not least at the par-4 3rd and the perilously narrow and long par-4 9th.
This is not a "woodland" course, but there are sections, like the tree-clad valley you play up and down at the 8th and 9th holes, where trees and smaller bushes have a habit of getting in the way, or swallowing-up your ball if you are too wayward with tee and approach shots. On two occasions ponds skirt alongside the greens: first, at the long par-4 5th, and again at the par-4 12th, where an arched bridge provides the hole with its distinctive backdrop.
This excellent, varied and testing Miller creation has the capacity to raise you up or grind you down; the outcome probably depending on how carefully you pick your way through the tough closing five - about as testing a stretch of golf holes as they come.
Visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Walking permitted Mon-Thur. Golf cart compulsory on Fri-Sun for pre-twilight tee-times.
