Eagle Vines Vineyards & Golf Club: Eagles Vines and its neighbour, Chardonnay Golf Club share much in common. They sit side by side on similar, relatively open and nicely undulating terrain, with vineyards all around. Both straddle Fagan Creek and both were excellently laid out by Johnny Miller. In fact, ten of Eagle Vines' holes (the front-nine and the par-4 10th), were originally part of the 36-hole set-up at Chardonnay (now reduced to 27-holes).

With the soft, rolling hills of the southern end of Napa valley always in view, Eagle Vines will probe and challenge your shot-making and all round game. Water hazards in the form of small lakes and ponds protect several greens and dangerously flank some fairways. Copious bunkering and occasionally thick bushes, which run alongside and fill Fagan Creek, will also need to factored into your game plan.

A good looking replica of St Andrews' famous Swilken Bridge gets you across the "burn" (stream) in front of the long par-4 14th, a hole bordered on both sides by plenty of sauvignon blanc. Wine connoisseur or not, golf among the grapes, especially at the excellently maintained Eagle Vines, is a real pleasure. Miller's fair and challenging layout will satisfy your golfing appetite, while the clubhouse will tempt your palate with its selection of local wines.

Pick of the holes: the fabulous signature par-3 6th is played from a wonderfully elevated and landscaped tee, with rocks and shrubs cascading down to the side of a small lake, in which sits the island green and its four accompanying bunkers.

Did you know?

Eagle Vines is located at the southern end of the Napa Valley wine growing region, with the majority of the valley's 340 wineries stretching northward for a further 30 miles along the valley. John Patchett established the valley's first commercial vineyard in 1858. The region got a significant boost from the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, which featured Napa Valley wines that bettered several famous French labels in a blind tasting format.

The replica Swilken Bridge, which is crossed to get to Eagle Vines' 14th green, was designed by a Napa resident and Scottish exile from St Andrews. Unsurprisingly, he is known in local golfing circles as "Scottie".
