Nearby Santa Barbara is steeped in history. The Spanish were the first European settlers, arriving in 1782 to build the Presidio and Mission. A powerful earthquake and tsunami, one of the strongest in California history, completely destroyed the town and the Mission in 1812. The Mission was subsequently rebuilt in a grander manner, and it is this construction, the best-preserved of the California Missions, which survives to the present day.
