The nearby city of Portola is located on the middle fork of the Feather River, on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada. The city was named after the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá (1716-86), the first Spanish Governor of the Californias. He never actually visited this area, which at the time was part of a major Spanish administrative region known as Alta California, as distinct from the more southerly and also Spanish, Baja California.
