Maderas Golf Club

4-PLUS: Must play course - excellent standard; worthy of 4½ stars.

Est. 1999

Maderas Golf Club: quietly tucked away in rolling hills to the north of San Diego, this spectacular Johnny Miller-Robert Muir Graves design ranks with some of California's best. Meandering across wonderfully scenic hills and occasional woodland (maderas), the immaculately presented course contains beautifully crafted and challenging holes from start to finish.

Grassy hills and acres upon acres of wild flowers dominate the scene here, rather than housing or busy urban roads. A limited amount of mansion-sized real estate is perched above one or two holes, but never to the detriment of this wonderfully natural layout. Three small lakes complement the dry creeks and natural streams, ensuring water hazards and ravines are regularly brought into play.

The layout's frequent elevation changes also help to ramp-up the dramatic intensity and challenge on several holes. The opening duo take you on a gradual climb up a partly tree-lined valley, before the long par-5 3rd, picturesque par-3 4th and long par-4 5th bring you back down towards the clubhouse.

The front-nine's closing four-hole loop is played through the tightest, most tree-lined and water-defended section of the course. In contrast, the loop of holes from the par-5 14th to the par-4 16th occupies a more open valley, with panoramic views throughout. A stunning golf course set in a fabulous environment of natural rock features, sweeping hills, elevation changes and riparian (river-bank) woodland.

Did you know?

The Spanish word "maderas", meaning "woods", aptly describes the environment at the lower level of the golf course. As the course climbs up and away from the woods, "las colinas" (the hills) could also be used to describe the terrain.

Maderas is operated by Troon Golf, a world leader in golf course management and development.
