Quail Lodge, CA
Quail Lodge & Golf Club: Variety, picturesque scenery and an excellently maintained layout await the visiting golfer to Quail Lodge. At times relatively flat, at others more undulating, this parkland golf course may only measure 6,500 yards from the tips, but it throws down as good a golfing challenge as you'll find on the Monterey Peninsula.
Stylish, strategic bunkering, plenty of small lakes in play (especially on the closing stretch) and the Carmel River washing alongside some of the holes ensures the need for good course management. Some testingly tight tee-shots, not least at the short par-4 10th hole, will also require accuracy from the tee if you are to score well.
Nestling down in the scenic Carmel Valley there are many wonderfully natural stretches on this layout. Although houses are present alongside some of the holes, more so on the front-nine, they never intrude too closely. Added to the picturesque beauty of the valley, the golf course also contains a pleasant mix of several different tree varieties, further enhancing the layout's undoubted parkland charms.
Picturesque views aside, you will need to have homed in on your A-game for the testing and watery final few holes. As you putt out on the par-3 17th green and prepare to play your tee-shot at the par-4 18th, your gallery might just include one of Carmel Valley's more famous residents. The A-frame home perched above you on a small, white cliff belonged to the legendary actress, singer and animal welfare advocate, Doris Day (1922-2019).

Located just 4 miles from Quail Lodge is Carmel-by-the-Sea, usually just called Carmel. This famous Californian west coast town is endowed with a rich artistic history. In 1910 it was reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were "devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts."
The town has had several mayors who were poets or actors including Herbert Heron, founder of the Forest Theater, and actor-director Clint Eastwood, who was mayor for one term, from 1986 to 1988. Clint Eastwood is a co-owner of Pebble Beach Resorts, with its four championship golf courses (Pebble Beach Links, Spanish Bay, Spyglass Hill and Del Monte); he also owns a private golf course, Tehama, spectacularly located in the hills above Carmel.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
