Alisal (River)
River Course at the Alisal: In the heart of the Santa Barbara wine country, The Alisal Resort is home to two championship golf courses. The River course, located on the north side of the Santa Ynez River, occupies a picturesque area of relatively open and gently undulating terrain.
On the south side of the river, and running along the bottom of the Alisal Valley, you'll find the member and resort guest-only Ranch course. The older, considerably more tree-lined and more characterful Ranch course lays down a tougher challenge than its newer and easier-going stablemate.
Bordering the Danish-styled town of Solvang, the River course is played in a predominantly natural environment, where vineyards and rolling hills are much more in evidence beyond the course than housing. This pleasant, well-maintained, but not overly dramatic layout, has matured well following the original planting of sycamore, alder and liquid amber trees.
The River's generally good-width fairways are defined by a modest amount of earthmounding and bunkering, while three small lakes and a pond ensure the presence of water on nearly half the holes. Your first sighting of the wide, rock-filled Santa Ynez River comes at the par-5 14th, with the river also flanking the left side of the par-4 15th and 16th holes.
The signature par-3 17th measures only 123 yards from the tips, and is played to a small green, encircled by a wrap-around bunker. The picturesque scenery beyond the course provides a pleasant counter-point to the flatter and less visually exciting stretches of this maturing golf course.

Alisal (meaning "place of the sycamores") is a horse lover's paradise with numerous trails through 10,000 acres of valleys and rolling hills. Group, private and children's rides are all available through the Alisal Resort. The Alisal's spring-fed 100-acre private lake offers excellent boating and fishing. Private lessons and guide trips can be arranged.
The nearby Danish town of Solvang is a popular tourist destination. Founded in 1911 by a group of Danish educators, the architecture of many of the buildings follows traditional Danish style, while the city is home to bakeries, restaurants, and merchants offering a taste of Denmark in California. There is a copy of the famous Little Mermaid statue from Copenhagen, and one featuring the bust of the renowned Danish fable writer, Hans Christian Andersen.
