Old South
Old South Golf Links commands a solid reputation with both local and visiting golfers alike. Located on the last bit of mainland before crossing two bridges onto Hilton Head Island, the course is laid out on what was once part of the Buckingham Plantation.
This Clyde Johnston design straddles Buckingham Plantation Drive, with live oak forests, small lakes and marshlands frequently lining the not overly wide fairways. The gently rolling terrain combines with several marshside holes, where island greens offer wonderful views out onto the expansive wetlands beyond.
Not only did Johnston preserve the natural beauty of the land, his design allows golfers to experience a classic and natural Carolina landscape. As Johnston himself apparently said: "the variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh provided an opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.” And not forgetting the abundant natural and scenic views.

The nearby town of Bluffton, which was originally part of a royal parcel of land awarded to Lord Colleton, has a rich and fascinating history. Located on a high bluff overlooking the May River, Bluffton was a pastoral country retreat for wealthy plantation owners in Savannah and Beaufort in the 19th century.
Over the years, the area became popular with hunters, who enjoyed the rustic splendour of the Lowcountry woods. Today, Bluffton has become an increasingly popular area to call home, extending the appeal of Hilton Head Island to the mainland, and extending the range of golf courses on offer.
