18 holes. Tree-lined parkland. Gently undulating terrain - easy to walk (although some long green-to-tee walks).
Woodland and residential (more so on the front-nine)
Within close proximity to each other at St James Plantation (although each with its own separate clubhouse), are four championship courses : Founders Club (18-hole, par-72, 7016 yards); The Players Club (18-hole, par-72, 6940 yards); The Members Club (18-hole, par-72, 6887 yards); The Reserve Club (18-hole, par-72, 7212 yards).
6 miles W of Southport
Travelling north from Myrtle Beach on US Hwy 17, you will cross the border into North Carolina. Continue on Hwy 17 for approx 22 miles. At traffic lights, turn right onto the 211 direction Southport / Bald Head Island. After 12 miles, at traffic lights, turn right into St James Plantation. From gatehouse follow St James Drive for 1.3 miles and turn left into Players Club Drive. After o.6 miles golf clubhouse is on your left.
St James Plantation (The Players Club): If you can drag yourself away from the busier and brasher golfing hubbub of Myrtle Beach, then St James Plantation, with its four excellent championship courses is a great destination to sample.
The Players Club is the Plantation's best in terms of a classically wooded, picturesque and excellently presented layout. Many wonderfully crafted holes occupy the mainly pine-forested environment, which is intertwined with swampy wetland and small ponds that come into play on about half the holes.
On several occasions, this natural woodland-wetland environment, helped along by Tim Cate's terrific bunkering and use of large sandy waste areas, serves up golf holes of the very highest calibre. The par-3 7th for example is as good a par-3 as you'll find on any Lowcountry golf course ... or just make that any golf course, period. Holes like the par-4 12th and par-5 15th (along with several others) wouldn't look at all out of place at say Wentworth in England, although the occasional wetland carries (rather than heather) mark these out as classic Carolina fare.
With large and sometimes very large, undulating and immaculate greens, be prepared for a thorough examination of your putting skills. Real estate comes into the picture from time-to-time, but is never allowed to steal the show or detract from the visual enjoyment, naturalness and playability of this top-quality layout.
