The Witch Golf Club: GOLF COURSE PERMANENTLY CLOSED IN 2021.
[Original Where2Golf description]: The Witch Golf Club: this relatively "senior" and wonderfully natural Myrtle Beach course features more than 42 feet of natural elevation change. It also has more than a mile of bridges to transport you round the layout's plentiful swampland, as it pushes deep into the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge.
The undulation of the area is an integral factor in the layout, giving the course an aesthetically different feel than many other Myrtle Beach offerings. The signature short par-4 9th requires a drive over a thick marsh, avoiding trees on both sides of the relatively tight landing area, before taking on a water-defended carry onto the green. One to savour on the back-nine is the long straightaway par-5 11th.
Course permanently closed in 2021.
Golf cart compulsory.
The "Mystical Golf Courses" first waved their magic wand in Myrtle Beach in 1989 with the opening of The Witch Golf Club. The Man O’ War and The Wizard courses were then launched in 1995, and still very much open. Designed by architect Dan Maples, the two remaining courses are well recognised as among Myrtle Beach’s “best values” courses. The Man O’ War course features its renowned signature island green par-3 15th hole.
Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7).
After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
