Reunion (Watson)
Reunion Resort (Tom Watson course; formerly the Independence course by Tom Watson): As one of three championship layouts at the Reunion Resort, Tom Watson's objective for The Independence was to "create a golf course of outstanding beauty, variety and challenge". Although lacking a single water hazard, and with more housing in view than on the Palmer or Nicklaus courses, Watson's objectives have been amply met.
This handsome layout benefits from nicely undulating terrain and an exquisite array of fairway and greenside bunkering. Small pot bunkers, larger sand traps and fairway hugging waste areas all play a considerable part in challenging your shot-making. The green surrounds contain a mix of slick run-offs and areas of deeper rough to test your short game, while large and prodigiously sloping greens will expose any weaknesses with the putter.
The course maintains a natural balance, especially on the front-nine, with several stretches flanked on one side by woodland, and a liberal scattering of sturdy oaks. The rolling fairways and attendant mounding give many holes an easy-on-the-eye profile, although don't be deceived into thinking that makes scoring any easier.
On the back-nine condos and houses become more evident, although a couple of the green-to-tee drives through areas of wooded swamp provide reminders of the area's original natural habitat. The par-4 18th is a pleasantly tree-lined hole, finishing beneath the towering Reunion Grande hotel.

The LPGA's Ginn Open was played at the Reunion Resort between 2006 and 2008. The tournament's front-nine utilised the front-nine of the Palmer course, while the closing nine for the tournament was played on the front- nine of the Watson course. (See our Tournaments section >by Venue >Reunion)

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
