Sawgrass Country Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1972

Sawgrass Country Club's original East and West nines opened in 1972, to be joined in 1984 by the nine-hole South course, also designed by Ed Seay. The 27-holes are generally set a few hundred yards back from the seashore, with only the East course offering the briefest of glimpses of the ocean.

If you do tee it up at this private member's club (accessible by Marriott Sawgrass resort guests), you'll no doubt warm to Seay's layout, and the quality of its presentation. Housing lines sections of the perimeter, but not to detract from the attractive Floridian openness of the course itself.

The original East-West layout contains arguably the best and most memorable holes. The daunting par-5 4th and par-4 5th both bring marshland into play, with the Guana River wandering across these two holes. Between them, you briefly glimpse the Atlantic Ocean as you drive from green to tee. The signature par-3 6th on the West course presents a panoramic view of one of the larger lakes on the course, a portion of which must be negotiated on the tee shot.

Defined by a liberal scattering of pine and palm trees, this excellent layout possesses memorable closing stretches on the East and West nines. Both bring a large picturesque lake into play on several holes. A wonderful variety of birdlife inhabit these closing stretches; perhaps a welcome distraction if the lake is claiming too many of your Pro-V1 balls.
