The Park at West Palm Beach (formerly West Palm Beach Golf Course): open to golfers of all abilities and ages, The Park features a Gil Hanse-Jim Wagner designed championship golf course, a nine-hole floodlit par-3 course (the Lit 9), and top-tier practice facilities. More than just a place to play, The Park also offers expert instruction, community programs, and great dining, all in a beautiful South Florida setting.

The storied past of the West Palm Beach municipal golf course ended in 2018, when after years of steady decline, the Dick Wilson-designed course closed. The new "Sandbelt-style" design at The Park represents a significant departure from Wilson's classic Floridian parkland layout. There's no water to worry about here, but the bunkering is deep and penal, and sandy waste areas are plentiful beyond the good-width fairways.

Much of the credit for the routing of the new course goes to local businessman Dirk Ziff. The detail on the canvas was supplied, without their usual designer fees, by world renowned golf architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner. Despite the proximity of the busy I-95 interstate highway, to the west of the course, The Park is already establishing itself as one of Florida's top publicly accessible layouts.

Did you know?

The Park represents the rebirth of a municipal golf course that had fallen into serious decline, and which closed its doors in 2018. Following the closure, a foundation was started with the goal of transforming the site into a re-energised, high-quality golf and community facility. The foundation had the full backing of local golfers (including Tiger Woods), city authorities, PGA of America's Seth Waugh, and local businessman Dirk Ziff.

The revitalisation concept was not just to attract visiting golfers from near and far, but also to ensure the facility served the local community, and especially its youth. The stunning new Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner designed course opened in 2023, with Tiger Woods hitting the ceremonial first shot.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
