Woodland (including tidal creeks and lakes) and residential.
Designer:
In 1998 Rees Jones combined and updated two of Sea Island's four nine-hole layouts (Plantation & Retreat). This created the resort's Plantation course, which was later substantially reworked by Davis Love III and his brother Mark Love (Love Design) (2019).
In 1999 Tom Fazio combined and updated the other two Sea Island nine-hole layouts (Seaside & Marshside), to produce the Seaside course.
The three 18-hole championship courses at Sea Island are: Seaside course (par-70; 7055 yds from back tees); Plantation course (par-72; 7058 yds) and Retreat course (par-72; 6490 yds).

Sea Island Resort (Plantation course): The Sea Island Resort on St Simons Island is home to three top-quality championship golf courses. The highly-regarded Seaside course was created in 1999 when Tom Fazio oversaw the combining of the resort's nine-hole Seaside and Marshside layouts. A year earlier Rees Jones had combined the former Plantation and Retreat nines, to form the Plantation course. The newest of the Sea Island layouts is know as the Retreat course.
The Plantation layout is routed through avenues of ancient live oak and cedar, with danger lurking where water threatens in the form of tidal creeks and lakes. Rees Jones called the Plantation course a "parkland by the sea" ... Atlantic Ocean vistas combining with the layout's lush natural scenery.
Expansive fairways are one of the hallmarks of this parkland-style course as it winds through both marsh and forest. Along the way you'll enjoy views of the ocean, tidal creeks and lakes, live oaks and cedars, and blooming flowers. Sea Island's Plantation course, especially after its 2019 revamp by Davis and Mark Love, is a championship layout that now ranks with some of the best in Georgia.

In 1926 Sea Island resort founder Howard Coffin purchased the Retreat Plantation, a former cotton plantation on St. Simons Island. Coffin knew that space for golf courses was important to his venture, given the game's popularity with the resort's future guests.
The Retreat Plantation was originally owned and managed by Anna Matilda Page King (1798-1859), the wife of the frequently absent planter and slaveowner Thomas Butler King.
