Avalon Golf & Country Club (Avalon Lakes course)

5-star: Fabulous – courses don’t get much better than this.

Est. 1967

Avalon Golf & Country Club is home to a trio of 18-hole championship courses, all situated within an easy drive of each other. Avalon Lakes is the highest rated of the three, and is complemented by its two sister courses: Squaw Creek, which is located 3.5 miles to the east of Avalon Lakes in Vienna, OH, and Avalon at Buhl Park, 15 miles to the east in Sharon, Hermitage, PA.

Avalon Lakes is one of the top-rated and finest championship golf courses in Ohio. This excellent tree-lined parkland layout contains a wealth of wonderfully crafted, memorable and challenging holes. Definitely a course that will challenge your all-round game, and well worth going out of your way to play to play this early Pete Dye classic.

Did you know?

Avalon Lakes played host to the LPGA Tour from 1993 thru' 2000 (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Avalon Lakes CC).

The name Avalon originally comes from a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend. It is the place where King Arthur's sword Excalibur was forged and where Arthur was taken to recover from his wounds after the Battle of Camlann. Avalon was associated from an early date with mystical practices.

Tournaments

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.

Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.

The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
