Forest Dunes (The Loop)
Forest Dunes Golf Club (The Loop) represents a handsome "doff of the cap" to the original 22-hole layout at the Home of Golf. In days of yore players on the Old Course St Andrews enjoyed 11 holes "on their way out" and then the same 11 (but played in the opposite direction) "on their way back".
Tom Doak's ingenious new creation at Forest Dunes draws on similar concepts as found in the original St Andrews layout. The 18 "reversible" holes feature two links-style layouts. On alternate days, you can go round the 18-holes in a clockwise direction (Black course), while the following day you can play the same 18-holes anticlockwise (Red course). Course description, images and other details to follow soon.
Stay&Play: onsite accommodation is available in cottages, villas and the Lake AuSable Lodge (see Where2Stay section below).
The Loop is reserved for guests staying at Forest Dunes' onsite Lodge (Lake AuSable Lodge). The original Forest Dunes course is open to outside visitors.
Must book in advance.
Non-metal spike facility. Walking-only course. Caddies available.
Excellent
The Loop at Forest Dunes is based on 18 reversible holes; played clockwise they form the Black Course, or anti-clockwise the Red course. The inspiration for this reversible layout (the Old Course St Andrews) actually started life with just 11 holes. The 11 were played in one direction "going out" and the opposite direction "coming home", giving a round of 22 holes. The 11 were cut to nine in the mid-1700s, creating an 18-hole round, which quickly became the norm for all golf courses.
By the mid-1800s the popularity of golf in St Andrews had increased to such an extent that playing both the outward and inward nines to the same greens was becoming impractical and dangerous. To solve the problem it was decided to cut two holes on each green, with white flags for outward holes and red for inward ... the origin of the Old Course's seven double-greens.
Black course (clockwise):
Michigan's 11th best course (Golf Digest, 2025/26).
USA's 63rd best public access course (Golf Digest, 2025/26).
Red course (counterclockwise):
Michigan's 15th best course.
USA's 68th best public access course.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.

It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
