Sand Valley (Sedge Valley)
Sand Valley Resort (Sedge Valley course): Following on from the immense success of Bandon Dunes in Oregon, and Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs in Nova Scotia, Sand Valley is another exciting development from the Mike Keiser stable. The resort now boasts five courses: Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes, Sedge Valley, The Lido, and the Sandbox short-course.
The Sedge Valley course pays homage to some of the great "heathland" courses located to the south and west of London ... the likes of Swinley Forest, West Sussex, Woking, New Zealand, The Addington, and the coastal links course of Rye.
Designed by Tom Doak, the layout is characterised by rolling fairways that run firm and fast, but edged by vegetation rather than the tumultous sandscapes of the other Sand Valley courses. Golfers will experience the timeless elements of course design that are found on England's best heathland courses.
In some ways immune from the power-hitting advances of the modern game, this layout brings back a more intimate scale and classically styled holes. A course to engage your decision-making, as much as your muscle-power, especially at the inviting short par-4s.
The first layout at Sand Valley, the Sand Valley course, was crafted by Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw. It now has several stablemates, including Mammoth Dunes designed by David McLay-Kidd. There's also Tom Doak's heathland-style Sedge Valley course, and his faithful recreation of Charles Blair Macdonald's much revered "lost gem", the Lido course of Long Island, NY origins. The 17-hole Sandbox course offers the chance to hone your short game skills on holes that measure between 40 and 140 yards.

Mike Keiser, co-founder of greeting card giant Recycled Paper Greetings, fell in love with the links golf courses of the British Isles. He decided these coastal duneland courses, much visited by North American golfers, needed to be brought much closer to home. And so Bandon Dunes was created - an out of the way golfer's paradise, built alongside the Pacific Ocean, amongst impressive Oregon dunes.
Sand Valley continues the British-theme, but this time mainly inspired by inland "heathland" courses. The earliest heathland courses were built amongst the sandhills of a vast open heath that lay to the west of London. The courses gave London golfers in the 1890s and early 1900s a playing experience not too dissimilar from playing seaside links golf ... all that was missing was the sea!

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
Join us at The Dutch from August 21–24 for the Festival of Golf, featuring the HotelPlanner Tour. Experience four days of top-tier sport, live music, incredible food, and unexpected surprises.
