Chickasaw GC
Originally one of the five Bear Trace courses designed by Jack Nicklaus for Tennessee State Parks (see Did You Know section below), the layout at Chickasaw benefits from a wonderfully natural woodland setting. Roads and housing play no part in proceedings here.
Located in Chickasaw State Park, this well-rated and popular golf course is laid out on pleasantly undulating terrain, which gives many holes great character. A common feature of the holes here is to drive the ball from elevated tees, with a clear view of the "trouble" ahead, then play down and back-up to elevated greens.
The course weaves its way through a wonderful forest of pines, oaks, tulip poplars and hickories, stretching to just over 7,100 yards from the back tees. Chickasaw lays down a good test for golfers of all abilities, who will enjoy hitting to good-width, but never overly wide fairways.
With plenty of attractive bunkering, a few small ponds and Piney Creek meandering past seven of the holes, there is plenty to concentrate on and put your course management to the test. Maintenance standards are good without necessarily being immaculate, but be assured, Chickasaw will not disappoint.
This is a very attractive and natural tree-lined layout, definitely one to include on your play list if you are in the area. After your round, the handcrafted clubhouse, styled after a log cabin and overlooking the 18th hole, provides an ideal place to muse on all those "what ifs?" from your round.

The Chickasaw people are Native Americans who previously inhabitated parts of Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee. Before contact with the first European settlers, the Chickasaw had migrated east of the Mississippi River and occupied much of what is present-day northeast Mississippi.
In 1832 they were forced to sell their lands and move to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) during the era of Indian Removal. Most Chickasaw (the 13th largest federally recognised tribe in the United States) now live in Oklahoma. The Chickasaw are related to the Choctaw and share a common history with them; both are of the Muskogean linguistic group.
Originally five Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses made up The Bear Trace quintet, which is spread out from east to west in southern Tennessee. Still in operation as Bear Trace courses are those at Tims Ford, Cumberland Mountain and Harrison Bay. In western Tennessee, the former Bear Trace courses at Chickasaw and Ross Creek Landing are now operated independently of the Tennessee State Parks' "Bear Trace" golf collection.

Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
