Crystal Springs Resort (Crystal Springs course)

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1991

The Crystal Springs course at Crystal Springs Resort comprises the Village and Classic nines. Both these nine-hole loops take you on a grand tour of the property, accompanied by plenty of elevation change. Throughout, the key to success is accurate shot-making, not least from the tee, but also on approaches into the extravagantly defended greens.

Like the neighbouring Wild Turkey course, the Crystal Springs layout sets off from the Grand Cascades Lodge. It immediately drops downhill, courtesy of a relatively tight opening par-5 where you'll need to be careful of housing on the hole's right-side. Other fairways also demand precision from the tee, while a proliferation of ridges, bunkers and mounding, especially around the greens, adds to the "intimidation factor" on Von Hagge's challenging layout. A mix of woodland, wetland and real estate lines the holes, with the housing usually set well back, but occasionally in range for wayward hitters.

The course highlights are found in an attractive collection of par-3 holes. Like the 4s and 5s, they require accurate, well-judged shot-making to find the safety of the putting surfaces. Pride of place goes to the downhill par-3 11th, which is played to a green that sits alongside a water-filled, former limestone quarry. Limestone outcroppings picturesquely add to the scene.
