Philadelphia Cricket Club
Philadelphia Cricket Club is home to the highly-rated 18-hole Wissahickon and Militia Hill courses, both located in Flourtown. Four miles further south is the Club's St Martins course ( ... of US Open fame!). A small offshoot from the Wissahickon Creek runs through both the 18-hole Flourtown layouts, while the St Martins course, in its separate location, is still just a stone's throw from the Creek.
The "Tilly in Philly", as the Wissahickon course is often called, is the Club's No.1 course, laid out in two nine-hole loops. In 2016 it hosted a PGA Senior Tour major championship, and in 2025 a full PGA Tour event.
Lightly tree-lined and heavily bunkered, the course sits quietly in a pleasant leafy upmarket neighbourhood, with its sibling, the Militia Hill course (and separate clubhouse) directly next door.
Limited access: these private courses are generally playable only by members and their invited guests
Private club; visitors/guests may only play if hosted by a member.
The Wissahickon course is a walking only course; golf carts available only with a medical certificate. Unaccompanied guests must use a caddie on all PCC's courses.
Excellent
Founded in 1854, The Philadelphia Cricket Club is one of the oldest sports clubs in America ... and, yes, along with its many other sports, the noble game of cricket is still played!
The club's original nine-hole golf course was built by course architect Willie Tucker in 1895, and expanded to a full 18 in 1897. The course, located in the Wissahickon Valley, is now known as St Martins ... it hosted the U.S. Open Championship in 1907 and 1910.
In 1920, the Club commissioned one of its own members, the renowned A.W. Tillinghast, to create a second course further up Wissahickon Creek in Flourtown. Now known as the Wissahickon course, this Tillinghast layout shows the great man's genius as a golf course architect. The Wissahickon opened for play in 1922.
The Club opened a second championship 18-hole course in 2002, designed by the highly accomplished team of Dr Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. Adjacent to the Wissahickon course, Militia Hill's modernity complements its classic neighbour.
Wissahickon course:
Pennsylvania's 5th best course (Golf Digest, 2025/26).
USA's 120th best course (Golf Digest, 2025/26).
Militia Hill course:
Pennsylvania's 28th best course.
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.
It offers two superb layouts: Le Vineuil, a five-star championship course with a rich history, and Longères, an excellent four-star course that provides a strong and enjoyable test.
The wider Paris region offers plenty more. Courses such as Fontainebleau, Golf de Saint-Germain, and several other top-rated layouts make this area one of Europe’s most rewarding golf destinations, offering a mix of woodland, heathland, and parkland designs.
The Dutch: "It's no' just a game", as they say in Scotland, and that's certainly true at The Dutch. With 5-star services throughout, a lavishly comfortable Loch Lomond-inspired clubhouse, and a superbly designed and presented golf course, one could not ask for more from this top-end private club.
