Turning Stone (Shenendoah)
Turning Stone Resort (Shenendoah Golf Club): The Shenendoah has much in common with its companion layout, the also highly-rated Kaluhyat. Both courses start and finish alongside the main resort centre, and both combine a mix of links-style, woodland and wetland holes. However, they are by no means identical twins. Where the Kaluhyat takes you on a rangy, out-and-back journey away from the resort, the two nine-hole loops of Shenendoah keep you closer to the resort itself. The challenging Kaluhyat possesses some notably tight stretches, whereas the Shenendoah is more forgiving, at least in terms of "elbow room" from the tee.
The Shenendoah (meaning "deer" in the Iroquois language) is the busiest and least undulating of Turning Stone's three championship courses. It weaves together six links-style holes, with six woodland and six marshland (wetland) holes. Ever-present bunkering provides a stylish first-line of defence to most holes. If you stray too far beyond the fairways and accompanying bunkering, then all manner of woodland, wetland and fescue grasses come into play.
Regarded as the easiest going of Turning Stone's championship trio, the Shenendoah is not without its challenges. The layout's variety of holes and diversity of habitat provide an enjoyable test for golfers of all abilities.
Stay&Play: onsite accommodation is available in the resort's hotel, lodge and tower (see Where2Stay section below).

The pronunciation of the course names at Turning Stone comes from the language of the Oneida native American people, who were one of the founding nations of the Iroquois League of central and upstate New York. Oneida means "people of the standing/upright stone." Atunyote (Oneida for eagle) is said something along the lines of "A-doon-yo," while Kaluhyat ("the other side of the sky") is pronounced "Ga-loo-ya." Shenendoah, sometimes spelt Shenandoah, is an Iroquoian word for "deer" and is said phonetically.
Turning Stone's Kaluhyat Golf Club is an Audubon International Certified Signature Sanctuary course.
