Memorial Park, TX
Memorial Park Golf Course is a pleasantly testing layout, very popular with Houston golfers, and rated one of the best municipal courses in Texas. Just a ten-minute drive away is downtown Houston, its skyline in view from several holes on the course.
Laid out in two nine-hole loops on relatively flat terrain, this lightly tree-lined parkland course should not disappoint. Benefitting from Tom Doak's redesign in 2019, the layout now presents a better golfing challenge, with its large contoured greens and sharper bunkering. The layout's irrigation and drainage capabilities were also substantially improved.
Pick of the holes: the par-5 16th and par-4 17th play either side of the same good-size pond, which dangerously flanks the fairways of both these holes on the right side. At 16 the pond needs to be crossed en route to a green surrounded on three sides by water.
Municipal course - visitors welcome on weekdays and weekends. Closed on Tuesdays.
Must book in advance.

Memorial Park is one of the busiest municipal courses in the United States, regularly logging over 60,000 rounds a year. The course is no stranger to top level competition, having hosted the PGA Tour's Houston Open in 1947, 1951-63 and again in 2020 (see our Tournaments section >by Venue >Memorial Park).
The Memorial Park Golf Course redesign in 2019 and return of the Houston Open to the course in 2020 were moves orchestrated by Houston Astros (baseball) owner Jim Crane and the Astros Foundation.

Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
