Borth & Ynyslas Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 1885

Borth & Ynyslas Golf Club: Laid out in classic out-and-back fashion, you start your round at the northern end of the village of Borth. The early holes may seem rather flat (as are the closing holes) but accuracy rather than topography will initially be uppermost in your mind. The road to Ynyslas literally runs alongside most of the opening holes and Borth beach lies on the other side.

At the tight par-4 2nd your tee shot is played with the road on your right and the beach on your left, and there's little room for error. The par-4 17th demands a similarly exacting tee-shot, this time with a reed-lined water hazard on one side and the road on the other.

As you progress towards the village of Ynyslas, the flat terrain gives way to a more interesting area of sand dunes (more typical of great seaside links courses) and its here in the middle section of the course that some of the best holes are to be found.

The playing surfaces may not be as manicured as on the best parkland courses in Wales, but the experience here comes closer to golf as it used to be - and for Wales' oldest 18-hole layout, that's no bad thing. There's no doubting the seaside credentials of this enjoyable links course, with the sea and Borth Beach constant companions throughout.
