Tenby Golf Club

4-star: Above average course - well worth a visit.

Est. 1888

Tenby Golf Club: Located in the far south-western corner of Wales, Tenby can boast a links golf course with plenty of bumps and hollows, excellent greens and sizeable sand dunes. Filling the gap between the sea on one side and the local coastal railway on the other, this classic out-and-back layout takes you along to the neighbouring village of Penhally, before turning around and bringing you back to Tenby.

Apart from a slight "inland" detour across the railway tracks to play the 15th, 16th and 17th holes, the terrain here is typically open, undulating and provides an unmistakably full-on links experience. The seashore is more a case of rugged charm and craggy rocks than inviting expanses of sand, although from time to time you will be rewarded with some fine views onto the mouth of the Bristol Channel and offshore Caldey Island.

This is certainly a course to test and challenge your full array of shot-making (especially on a first outing) with seemingly no end of marker posts to help you navigate several blind drives and approach shots. Perhaps not the most spectacular of the Welsh links courses, Tenby is certainly one where you'll grow to appreciate its finer points the more you get to know it.

Did you know?

Tenby Golf Club was officially founded in September 1888, making it the oldest established golf club in Wales (Borth & Ynyslas Golf Club lays claim to being the oldest course, with an 18-hole layout dating back to 1885). However, a passage in local Tenby records of 1875, comment on local court proceedings being adjourned whilst the Mayor and magistrates took time off to play golf. Therefore, it would appear the sport was alive and well in the area some years before.

Tenby was a founder member of the Welsh Golfing Union in 1895 along with Porthcawl (founded 1892), Swansea Bay (1894), Glamorganshire (1890), Caernarvonshire (1890), Borth & Ynylas (1885), Aberdovey (1892), Rhyl (1890) and Merionethshire.
