After graduating from the University of Miami, Bob Cupp commenced a short career as a golf professional. But it wasn't long before he turned to his true vocation as a golf course designer. In 1970 he joined the Nicklaus Design team, where he worked as a senior designer for more than 15 years. Jack Nicklaus credits Cupp as one of the cornerstones of his global design organisation.
Cupp formed his own design firm in 1984, parting company with Nicklaus Design in 1986, although he and Jack Nicklaus remained good friends. A member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Bob rose to the Executive Committee and became the Society's President in 2012-13.
His work over the years included a number of joint projects worked on with his son, Robert E. "Bobby" Cupp Jr, a golf course architect and course builder.
Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
