Having moved with his parents from South Korea to the USA when aged 10, Wi subsequently attended the University of California, Berkeley and enjoyed a highly successful college golf career. He subsequently turned professional in 1995, becoming one of the best Asian players to emerge, although with mixed early fortunes on the US and European tours. Wi is a methodical player, and a key exponent of the 'stack and tilt' golf swing.

Second-placed and defending champion Thongchai Jaidee (Thai) finished 1 shot behind first-time European Tour winner Wi (S Kor). Reduced to 54 holes due to bad weather. Played as the SK Telecom Open (May 17-20; Asian/Korean Trs event; formerly SK Telecom Classic). Wi (S Kor) beat Wook-soon Kang (S Kor) with a birdie at the seventh playoff hole. Simon Yates (Scot) was eliminated at the fifth playoff hole. [Ildong Lakes GC, Kyonggi-do, S Korea].

Played as the Mild Seven Kuala Lumpur Open (Asian Tr event). Second-placed Wen-teh Lu and Lian-wei Zhang (China) finished 4 shots behind Wi (S Kor). [Palm course, Saujana G&CC, nr Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia].
Women’s (British) Open: the last women’s major championship of the season is hosted by Royal Porthcawl GC. It’s the first time this fabulous seaside links course has hosted the event (July 31-Aug 3).
Walker Cup: the 50th playing of this prestigious men’s amateur event sees the GB&I go head-to-head against the defending USA team at Cypress Point Club, California (Sept 6-7). After that, all eyes turn to Bethpage State Park on Long Island, NY, where the American and defending European professional teams engage in the 45th Ryder Cup (Sept 27-29).
Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.
Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
