The inaugural US Open (Oct 4; contested by 10 professionals and one amateur). Second-placed Willie Dunn Jr (Scot), the favourite and defending champion from the unofficial event held the previous year, finished 2 shots behind Rawlins (Eng). Rawlins first prize was $200, although $50 was deducted for the cost of the winner's gold medal. [Newport CC, Rhode Island].
