Did you know?

In the inter-war years, when Glenna Collett Vare dominated women's golf in the United States, Joyce Wethered did the same in the United Kingdom. Four-time winner of the British Womens Amateur title in the 1920s, she was also English Ladies' Amateur champion for five consecutive years from 1920.

The great Bobby Jones once said of Wethered "I have not played golf with anyone, man or woman, amateur or professional, who has made me feel so utterly outclassed." Joyce Wethered married Sir John Heathcoat-Amory in 1937 and moved to the Heathcoat-Amory's family estate at Knighthayes Court near Tiverton in Devon.

Joyce's brother, Roger Wethered, was also a highly accomplished golfer and member of West Surrey and then Worplesdon Golf Clubs. Roger was runner-up to home-favourite Jock Hutchison in the 1921 Open Championship at St Andrews. He soundly defeated another Scotsman, Robert Harris, 7 and 6 in the 1923 Amateur Championship at Royal Cinque Ports.
