Robert Bernhardt "Bob" Hagge, known to the golfing world as Robert von Hagge, is one of America's leading course architects of the modern era. He grew up as the adopted son of Ben Hagge, a golf course landscaper who had worked at one time with the legendary Donald Ross.
The enterprising young Hagge was raised next to a golf course, where he held the positions of caddie, shop boy (cleaning and repairing golf clubs), caddie master, course maintenance crewman, assistant greens superintendent and assistant golf professional. He was also a commercial illustrator for sporting magazines, and all this before his 17th birthday.
Known for his movie star good looks (he once appeared in television commercials as the "Marlboro Man"), von Hagge worked in the early-1950s as a club pro in New York, before travelling west to Hollywood. In California he had two unsuccessful marriages to sisters who played on the LPGA Tour - Alice and Marlene Bauer.
In 1955, Dick Wilson, one of America’s foremost golf course architects, employed von Hagge as an apprentice golf course designer. Within a few years Hagge was recognized by the profession as the principal designer on the Wilson firm. Von Hagge left the Dick Wilson Company in 1963, and set-up on his own. It was in the 1960s he changed his name to Robert von Hagge.
During six decades as a course designer, von Hagge was responsible for the design or redesign of 250 courses in the United States and 16 other countries. He initially worked in partnership with Bruce Devlin, and from the 1980s with Mike Smelek and Rick Baril. In the U.S., the Blue Monster course at Doral (for which Dick Wilson often gets the credit) and the Tournament course at The Woodlands in Texas are two of von Hagge's best known layouts. In Europe von Hagge's portfolio includes some of the best known layouts in France, as well as others in Italy and Spain. Les Bordes in the Loire Valley near Orleans is regarded by many as his masterpiece.
