Roy Anderson Dye (known both as "Roy" and "Andy") is a member of the famous Dye family of golf course designers. Roy was the son of Paul "Pink" and Elizabeth Dye. Together with his sister annand brother Paul (known as Pete), he was raised in the small rural town of Urbana, Ohio, 17 miles north of Dayton.
Roy attended Yale University where he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering, at which time he joined the Marines. During his military service, he met and married annS. Hayes. Together they raised eight children, several of whom joined the family course design and construction business.
Using his degree, Roy worked for several different companies inventing plastics. In 1969, after 20 years in chemical engineering, he joined his brother Pete in golf course design. Under Pete's tutelage, Roy employed a similar “Scottish” style of architecture, using deep pot bunkers, rolling fairways and undersized greens to test the golfer. After several co-designs with his brother, Roy began to undertake his own designs, and subsquently decided to relocate the family from his long-time home in Urbana, Ohio to Arizona.
Roy always made sure that everyone in the family was gainfully employed. Oldest son Andy would visit sites to coordinate with contractors and owners. From aged 14, Cynthia would hand draw routings and green details. Roy's daughter Carolyn would keep up with the administrative needs of the business, while son Matt took a particular interest in greens construction. Roy's youngest son Luke, took on the role of construction supervisor. Roy stayed true to the Dye name and kept things in the family.
In 1968, Roy was diagnosed with cancer, but for the next 26 years he persevered, travelling the world to design and build golf courses. The fight with cancer ultimately got the better of him in 1994.
