Bermuda, a mid-Atlantic archipelago in the Sargasso Sea, is formed by the rim of a submarine volcano. Located approximately 1,000 km (650 mi) east of South Carolina, this British Overseas Territory was discovered in 1503 by the Spanish explorer Juan de Bermúdez, after whom the islands are named.
The large sea area known as the Bermuda Triangle lies to the southwest of the island; several planes and ships have mysteriously disappeared in this notorious "Devil's Triangle".
