Played as the Catalina Island Open (Dec 13-15; 54-hole event). Second-placed Olin Dutra (USA) finished 1 shot behind 24-year-old Tony Manero (USA), who recorded the first of his eight PGA Tour wins. Manero shot a 7-under-par 59 on the final day, which involved two circuits on a par-33 nine-hole layout. On the first two days, the full 18-hole were used on this short 4,670-yard par-67 layout. [Catalina CC, Avalon, Santa Catalina Island, CA]. Note: the third edition of this tournament was scheduled to be played on Dec 12-14, 1930, but seemingly was not played.

Played as the inaugural Catalina Island Open (Dec 21-23). Second-placed Walter Hagen (USA) finished 1 shot behind 20-year-old Horton Smith (USA), who recorded his second PGA Tour win. The event involved four 18-hole rounds, played as eight circuits on a par-32 nine-hole layout; 27-holes were played on the first two days, and 18 on the final day. The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).
Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).
Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with five wins out of her last five starts on the LPGA Tour. Winning the Chevron Championship also brought the second major championship win of her career.
Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda's five wins in five starts, when he placed second at the Houston Open. Either side of that, he won The Arnold Palmer, The Players, and then The Masters and The Heritage.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
