Watson (USA) won his second straight PGA Tour leading money winner title, with 1978 season earnings of $362,429 on the Tour. Gil Morgan (USA) was second with $267,459; Andy Bean (USA) was third with $267,241, just over $200 behind Morgan.
Norman (Aus) won the Australia/NZ Tour 1978 Order of Merit.

Ballesteros (Esp) won his third straight Harry Vardon Trophy as the European Tour 1978 Order of Merit winner. Using a season-long points system, Ballesteros accumulated 47,177 pts; Dale Hayes (RSA) was second with 30,204 pts; Nick Faldo (Eng) was third with 28,495 pts. Ballesteros also topped the Tour's 1978 Prize Money List with £54,348; Hayes was second with £43,890; Faldo was third with £37,911.

Sandy Lyle (Scot) won the European Tour 1978 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award as the leading first-season player. Lyle finished 49th on the Tour's (points-based) Order of Merit; he won £5,233 in prize money during the season.
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
