Aoki grew up in Chiba, Japan the son of a farmer. At age 15, he was introduced to golf as a caddie at Abiko Golf Club, and went on to become Japan's first international golf star. With 51 wins, he is the second most prolific winner on the Japan Tour (leading winner Jumbo Ozaki recorded 94 wins).
Aoki became the first Japanese player to win on the PGA Tour, and first Japanese man to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Aoki won 78 professional tournaments around the world. The closest he came to winning a major championship was finishing runner-up to Jack Nicklaus at the 1980 US Open at Baltusrol Golf Club.
