Stellenbosch Golf Club
Stellenbosch Golf Club
Est. 1904
Where2Golf says:
Stellenbosch Golf Club: This very enjoyable and classical parkland golf course is located in the very heart of the Stellenbosch wine growing region, just south of the town of the same name. Beautiful mountain and vineyard views abound from many parts of the layout, which occupies relatively flat terrain. Several tightish and pleasantly tree-lined fairways combine with good quality bunkering and occasional (but gentle) elevation changes, to ensure your game will be suitably probed and tested. Water hazards are not too numerous, although some small ponds strengthen the defences around a few of the greens, notably alongside the not overly large 18th green. Although located alongside the R44 Somerset West - Stellenbosch road, traffic noise is not an issue - most of the course is set well away from the road. Vineyards rather than real estate lie beyond the course boundary, allowing you to enjoy this very natural and picturesque layout without fear of breaking any windows ! With its companion World Amateur Team Trophy course (De Zalze) just a few hundred metres to the south (see Did You Know section below), this is an area well served by two very enjoyable and testing courses, and as many wineries as you could possibly visit anywhere in the world.

Did you know?
|
Stellenbosch has hosted a number of top golf events including the South African Open (in 1999) and the South African Masters on many occasions. In 2006 Stellenbosch (together with neighbouring De Zalze) hosted the prestigious World Amateur Team Championships (WATC). The biennial WATC, involves 3-person teams competing for the Eisenhower Trophy (men) and Espirito Santo Trophy (women). In 2006 at De Zalze, there was a nail-biting home win for the South African women's team, while the Eisenhower Trophy was won by the Netherlands (perhaps appropriate in a wine growing region that was originally established by Dutch settlers!). For more information on the WATC see our entry in the Golf Dictionary section.
