Beaver Creek Golf Club

3-PLUS: Good course - several memorable features; worthy of 3½ stars.

Est. 2002

Beaver Creek Golf Club: Only 20 minutes from downtown Baton Rouge off Hwy 61, BREC's Beaver Creek Golf Club is laid out on the rural plains to the north of Louisiana's state capital. It is located just over a mile from the site of the American Civil War Battle of Plains Store.

The course expansively weaves its way through a predominantly natural environment of woodland and wetland, and at times alongside relatively unobtrusive housing. An open, windswept, almost treeless front-nine gives way to a more sheltered and arguably more interesting back-nine, which offers up some tighter drives and a greater number of water hazards and wetland carries.

Several links-style pairs of holes are played in opposite directions alongside each other, or, as at the very good par-5 11th and par-4 12th, tightly flanking either side of a small lake. Another attractive pair of holes is the par-5 13th and par-4 14th, this time routed through a pleasant woodland/wetland environment.

On the more open front-nine loop, with its smooth mounding, gently rolling fairways and good quality bunkering, the par-4 5th and 7th holes arrive at the same, well-bunkered double-green.

A copious amount of large but relatively shallow bunkering lurks beside several fairways and around the large, undulating, good-quality greens. The long, closing par-4 18th is one such stylishly bunkered hole, played back to the modestly-sized clubhouse.

Lottie Woad: 21-year-old Woad burst onto the professional scene in July, with wins in the Women’s Irish Open (as an amateur) and three weeks later in the Women’s Scottish Open (as a professional). She nearly picked-up a major championship, placing third in The Evian in the same month.

Pádraig Harrington: the ever-likeable Irishman added the (British) Senior Open Championship title to his stellar array of tournament successes. His win came on Sunningdale’s spectacular Old Course. Harrington had already bagged the U.S. Senior Open title in June this year.
