Zhang was the first Chinese golfer to feature prominently on the international golf scene. He started his sporting career as a javelin thrower before discovering and teaching himself golf. He initially worked as a caddie-master at Zhuhai Golf Club, and became a three-time winner of the China Amateur title.
Zhang turned professional in 1994 and recorded his first China Tour win the following season. Wins on the Asian Tour quickly followed, and in 2003 he became the first Chinese golfer to win a European Tour event (the co-sanctioned Singapore Masters).

Played as the SSE Enterprise Wales Senior Open (June 3-5). Second-placed Paul Broadhurst (Eng) finished 3 shots behind Zhang (China), whose final round 8-under 62 clinched the win. Zhang became the first Chinese winner on the European Senior Tour; 13 years earlier he was the first Chinese to win on the main European Tour.
