Harwood came closest to winning a major championship at The Open in 1991 at Royal Liverpool. One off the lead after three rounds, he was beaten into second place by fellow countryman Ian Baker-Finch, who finished two clear. Two more Aussies, Craig Parry and Greg Norman also finished in the top ten. Many of Harwood's later professional wins came on the over-50s PGA Australia Legends Tour.
