Brother of Laurie Auchterlonie (who won the US Open in 1902). Willie was one of the youngest winners of the Open Championship, and also one of the last resident Scots to have done so. In his day, Willie dominated the club-making business, winning The Open with clubs he personally made.

The Open Championship (33rd) (Aug 31/Sep 1). Second-placed John Laidlay (Scot) finished 2 shots behind Aucterlonie (Scot). [Prestwick GC, Ayrshire, Scotland].
Presidents Cup: Geoff Ogilvy’s International Team take on Brandt Snedeker’s USA Team at the revered Medinah Country Club, near Chicago. The Internationals are trying to halt a run of 11 consecutive American wins. (Sept 24-27).
French Open: Continental Europe’s oldest national championship, dating from 1906, is once again staged on the Albatros Course at Le Golf National, near Paris. Defending champion is America’s Michael Kim. (Sept 24-27).
