The Ryder Cup (20th) (Sept 20-22). USA vs Gt Britain & Ireland. 12 top professionals per team competing over three days in a total of eight fourball matches, eight foursomes and 16 singles. Non-playing captains: Jack Burke Jr (USA); Bernard Hunt (Eng/GB&I). [Muirfield-The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, East Lothian].
Overall result: USA 19, GB&I 13.

GB&I: first year that the GB team was referred to as Great Britain & Ireland, although players had competed from Northern Ireland since 1947 and the Republic of Ireland since 1953. After three big losses in 1973, '75 and '77, the GB&I team was expanded to include continental European players in 1979.

NOTE: This marked the last of Michael Bonallack's nine consecutive Walker Cup appearances for GB&I, during which time he was twice the playing captain (1969 and 1971). He was never a non-playing captain. In a total of 25 foursomes and singles matches played, he won 8, lost 14 and halved 3.

Played as the World Cup of Golf (72-hole stroke play team event based on total scores of both players). Second-placed Gary Player & Hugh Baiocchi (RSA) finished 6 shots behind Jack Nicklaus & Johnny Miller (USA), who shared the $2,000 first prize. Best individual score: Johnny Miller (277). [Royal (Real) Las Brisas, Nueva Andalucía, Costa del Sol; at the time known as Las Brisas GC].
Sony Open in Hawaii: played at Waialae Country Club near Honolulu, the Sony Open takes over the spotlight from The Sentry as the PGA Tour’s calendar-year opening event (Jan 15-18). The Sentry (not being played in 2026) was formerly known as the Tournament of Champions, with a field typically restricted to golfers who won a PGA Tour event in the previous calendar year.
Dubai Desert Classic: the DP World Tour’s first Rolex Series event of 2026, is contested for the 37th time (Jan 22-25). First won by Englishman Mark James in 1989, it now boasts a four-time winner, Rory McIlroy. Played on the Emirates Golf Club’s Majlis course, this once desert-surrounded course is the long-time flagship for Golf in Dubai.
Our visit last month included two rounds at Golf de Chantilly, one of France’s most prestigious clubs.

Here at Prince’s Golf Club you'll find 27 excellent holes of links golf. Just over the fence and sharing similar terrain is Royal St George’s; but Prince’s is far from overshadowed by its venerable neighbour.
