The Solheim Cup (8th) (Sept 12-14). USA vs Europe. 12 top women professionals per team competing in 2x four foursomes, 2x four fourballs and 12 singles. Result: Europe 17.5, USA 10.5. NOTE: Following the postponement by a year of the 2001 Ryder Cup (due to the 9/11 attacks in the U.S.), this Solheim Cup was brought forward a year from 2004. This rescheduling meant future Solheim Cups would be played in odd numbered years and Ryder Cups in even numbered years.
Bizzarely for matches of this importance, it was decided that once Catriona Matthew holed the winning European putt in her match with Rosie Jones, the other four matches still being played would all be stopped and conceded by the person trailing. In all other major international competition it is usual to play all individual matches to a conclusion, irrespective of the team score.

The Solheim Cup (6th) (Oct 6-8). USA vs Europe. 12 top women professionals per team competing in 2x four foursomes, six fourballs and 12 singles. Result: Europe 14.5, USA 11.5. Non-playing captains: Dale Reid (Scot/Europe); Pat Bradley (Swe). [Loch Lomond GC, Luss, Dunbartonshire].

NOTE: in one of the most unsporting but "letter of the law-invoking" incidents in Solheim Cup history, USA captain Bradley demanded Sörenstam replay a chip shot, which Sörenstam had just holed from off the green. The American fourball team of Kelly Robbins and Pat Hurst claimed that Robbins faced a longer putt than Sörenstam's chip, and demanded Sörenstam replay her chip as a penalty for playing out of turn. Another example where the rules took precedence over the spirit of the game.
