Influenced by her father, Ciganda started to play golf at the age of five. She enjoyed a highly successful amateur career, winning the British Ladies Amateur title in 2007, and European Amateur in 2004 and 2008. While at Arizona State University she was a member of the successful "Sun Devils" golf team, which triumphed in the women's NCAA team championship in 2009.
Ciganda played in several professional tournaments as an amateur. She turned professional in 2011, recording two wins on the Ladies European Tour the following year. These wins helped her to claim the 2012 LET Order of Merit, Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honours.
