Roll of Honour

MAJORS (1): Masters Tournament (2011). Presidents Cup player (2011, '13, '15, '17). Multiple wins on the European, US PGA, Asian and Sunshine Tours. Sunshine Tour Order of Merit winner (2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07, 2010).

Did you know?

In addition to winning the 2011 Masters Tournament, Schwartzel enjoyed notable victories on the European Tour (11) and PGA Tour (2), as well as recording several other international tour wins. In 2022, aged 37, he was enticed onto Greg Norman's "rebel" LIV Golf series, alongside a few other well-known but mainly "ageing" golf stars, and an abundance of lower-ranked "unknowns".

Ranked No. 126 in the world, he won the inaugural LIV Golf event at the private Centurion Club north of London, collecting the $4 million first prize in the process (and a quarter-share of the $3 million first-place team prize). (LIV Golf is a Saudi Arabian-bankrolled breakaway rival to the main international tours. It is based on limited-field 54-hole events, with massive prize funds, guaranteed payouts and, for some, eye-watering signing-on bonuses).

LIV Golf

Played as the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series (London) (June 9-11; 54-hole 48-player no-cut individual event, and accompanying four-player team event). [Centurion Club, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire].
Individual event: Second-placed Hennie Du Plessis (RSA) finished 1 shot behind Charl Schwartzel (RSA). World ranked No.126 Schwartzel scooped the $4 million first prize and world No.133 Du Plessis the $2,125,000 second prize ... vast payouts for a rather modest field!
Team event: second-placed Crushers team (Peter Uihlein, Richard Bland, Phachara Khongwatmai & Travis Smyth) finished 14 shots behind the Stingers (Louis Oosthuizen, Hennie Du Plessis, Charl Schwartzel & Branden Grace), who shared the $3 million team first prize.
Note: the first of eight 2022 "Invitational Series" events run by Greg Norman's Saudi Arabian-bankrolled LIV Golf company ... a rival series of events to those staged by the world's established men's golf tours. LIV are the roman numerals for 54, the number of holes in each LIV Golf event).

Tournaments

The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).

Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).

Who's Who

Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with four wins out of her last four appearances on the LPGA Tour, a feat last achieved by Lorena Ochoa in 2008. Korda's win at the T-Mobile Match Play brought up her 12th LPGA Tour victory.

Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda’s three-in-three, when he placed second at the Houston Open. This followed back-to-back wins at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players. Like Korda, he remains comfortably ahead in the official world golf rankings.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club: With a clubhouse that might befit a Roman Emperor, and a golf course to match, you can be sure of a memorable outing at Rome's most talked about golf facility.

Jim Fazio's original layout was much changed to create a modern Ryder Cup course ... now one of the Eternal City's (and Italy's) most revered.
