Howell enjoyed three notable victories on the PGA Tour and two Presidents Cup appearances. In 2022, aged 43, he was enticed onto Greg Norman's "rebel" LIV Golf series, alongside a few other well-known but mainly "ageing" golf stars, and an abundance of lower-ranked "unknowns". (LIV Golf is a Saudi Arabian-bankrolled breakaway rival to the main international tours. It is based on limited-field 54-hole events, with massive prize funds, guaranteed payouts and, for some, eye-watering signing-on bonuses).

Played as the inaugural LIV Golf Mayakoba (Feb 24-26; 54-hole 48-player no-cut individual event, and accompanying 4-player team event). [El Camaleón course, Mayakoba Resort, Riviera Maya, Mexico].
Individual event: second-placed Peter Uihlein (USA) finished 4 shots behind Charles Howell III (USA), who pocketed the $4 million first prize.
Team event: second-placed Four Aces team (Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Pat Perez & Peter Uihlein) finished 9 shots behind the Crushers team (Bryson DeChambeau, Charles Howell III, Anirban Lahiri & Paul Casey), who shared the $3 million team first prize.

Charles Howell III (USA) beat Patrick Rodgers (USA) with a birdie at the second playoff hole (par-4 18th), to record his third PGA Tour win and first since 2007. [Seaside course, Sea Island GC, GA; Plantation course also used during first two rounds].

Played as the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill (Oct 3-6; the last of the 36 editions of this event, which started in 1968). Second-placed Scott Hoch (USA) and Brandt Jobe (USA) finished 2 shots behind 23-year-old Charles Howell III (USA), who recorded his first PGA Tour win. [River course, Kingsmill Resort, Williamsburg, VA].

Howell (USA) won the PGA Tour 2001 Rookie of the Year Award as the leading first-season player. He finished ninth on the Tour's money list, with earnings of $2,702,747.
Chevron Championship: the first women’s major championship of 2023 is played for the first time in Texas, having been uprooted from its home of 51 years at the Mission Hills Country Club, Rancho Mirage, California.
Italian Open: the 80th playing of this prestigious European event will see many 2023 Ryder Cup hopefuls build their “local knowledge” of the Marco Simone course in Rome. (May 4-7). Ryder Cup (Sept 29-Oct 1).
