Roll of Honour

British Amateur champion (1953, '58. '60). Walker Cup player (1947, '49, '51, '53, '55, '57, '59, 61, '63, '65, '67). World Golf Hall of Fame (inducted in 2007).

Did you know?

Born to George and Margaret Waters, Joe was just 10 days old when he was adopted by his maternal aunt Kathleen, and her husband James Carr. The Carrs were appointed as stewards at the Portmarnock Golf Club, providing young Joe with his introduction to golf. Based on his adopted parents position as Club employees, it was not possible for him to join Portmarnock. His lifelong association was with the nearby Sutton Golf Club.

From his humble beginnings, Carr went onto become one of Ireland's greatest amateur players. He appeared in a record 11 Walker Cups, and was paired against Jack Nicklaus in the final day singles in 1961 (Nicklaus won). He won three British Amateur titles, and was also runner-up in 1968. In 1991 he was appointed Captain of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, the first Irishman to be accorded this honour.
