Fitzpatrick's highly successful amateur career included victory in the 2012 British Boys Amateur Championship, and culminated in winning the U.S. Amateur Championship at The Country Club (Brookline) in 2013. After a brief spell at Northwestern University in Illinois, the 19-year-old Yorkshireman turned professional in 2014 and qualified to play on the European Tour in 2015.
Fitzpatrick didn't have to wait too long for success as a professional, with European Tour wins coming in 2015 and 2016. His early successes also won him a place in Europe's 2016 Ryder Cup team, where he was on the losing end of the two matches he played in.

Played as the DP World Tour Championship (Dec 10-13; postponed from Nov 19-22 due to world coronavirus pandemic; last of four Eurpn Tr Rolex Series events in 2020, concluding the season-long Race to Dubai Order of Merit). Second-placed Lee Westwood (Eng) finished 1 shot behind Matt Fitzpatrick (Eng), who collected the biggest prize in world golf in 2020.
