After a glittering amateur career, in which Nick Faldo played a key mentoring role, Dougherty turned professional the week after playing in the victorious GB&I Walker Cup team in 2001. His playing career on the European Tour has been eventful, with some excellent wins interspersed with some lean years and loss of form.

Played as the BMW International Open (June 25-28). Second-placed Rafa Echenique (Arg) finished 1 shot behind Nick Dougherty (Eng), who recorded the last of his three European Tour wins. Dougherty held on to win despite Echenique's albatross finish at the par-5 final hole, which gave the Argentinian a back-nine of 27 in a final round 62. Played as the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship (Oct 4-7). Second-placed Justin Rose (Eng) finished 2 shots behind Nick Dougherty (Eng), who recorded his second European Tour win. [Old Course, St Andrews, Fife. Earlier rounds of this pro-am event also played at Carnoustie and Kingsbarns].

Caltex/Carlsberg
Played as the Caltex Masters presented by Carlsberg (Jan 27-30; Asian/Eurpn Trs event). Second-placed Colin Montgomerie (Scot) and Maarten Lafeber (Neth) finished 5 shots behind first-time European Tour winner Dougherty (Eng). [Masters course, Laguna National G&CC, Singapore].

Dougherty (Eng) won the European Tour 2002 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award as the leading first-season player. Dougherty finished 36th on the Tour's Order of Merit, with earnings of €562,509.
The Masters: The 88th Masters Tournament at Augusta National sees LIV golfer Jon Rahm defend his title against the world’s best. Pressing hard will be world No.1 and 2022 champion Scottie Scheffler and world No.2 Rory McIlroy (April 11-14).
Chevron Championship: the women’s major championship season gets underway for the second year at its new Carlton Woods home outside Houston, Texas. World No.2 Lilia Vu defends (April 18-21).
Nelly Korda: records a perfect start to 2024 with five wins out of her last five starts on the LPGA Tour. Winning the Chevron Championship also brought the second major championship win of her career.
Scottie Scheffler: narrowly missed out on matching Nelly Korda's five wins in five starts, when he placed second at the Houston Open. Either side of that, he won The Arnold Palmer, The Players, and then The Masters and The Heritage.
