Europe's Best Golf Courses

Best golf courses in Europe listed by Country / Region.

Europe is the birthplace of golf. But there is no consensus about where exactly the game of sticks and balls played over 18 holes originated – maybe Scotland or maybe the low countries of continental Europe? However, those who have traversed the breadth of Europe with their golf clubs in tow are united in their agreement that the continent's choice in golf courses is excellent.

We're among those who have travelled to many European cities, including the UK and Ireland to discover and rate the best golf courses. That's 1,500 golf courses in all, including every major professional golf tournament venue here.

What can you expect at the top golf courses in Europe?

Purely in terms of spectacular putting surface, lush woodland environment and top-notch groundskeeping, Chantilly delivers an unforgettable golfing experience. Views out onto the Mediterranean, the thrill of alpine elevations and the impossible beauty of undulating valleys, Golf courses in France set the perfect scene for a quiet game where the only distraction is the beauty surrounding you.

We scoured many of the 32 council areas of Scotland to find the best coastal and inland golf courses, including some of the oldest and historic links in the country. The counties, districts and parishes of England are home to some of the world's best golf courses; the good news is that very few are private clubs, and most score an excellent 4 on 5 in our reviews.

A bit hard to pronounce but boasting finesse, loads of golfing challenges and a good mix of parkland-style and open links-style layouts, golf courses in Germany are truly 'wunderbar'! The land of Parmesan, pizza and pasta is into aquatic sports and cycling more than golf, but Italy's golf course resorts, clubs and public courses serve golfing enthusiasts' requirements pretty well.
Spain is a hub of European golf tourism, its quality and quantity of golf courses catering to a spectrum of skills and abilities. Our list comprises prestigious venues, sunny shoreline courses and verdant greens located in proximity to the Canary Islands

Golf courses in Portugal give you an opportunity to check out the vivid indigenous flora, while Sweden's vast, well-maintained greens put your skills to the test. Ireland's golf courses are one-of-a-kind, from the Jack Nicklaus crafted Killeen Castle Golf Club that hosts the Solheim Cup to the K Course where the River Liffey gently meanders its way alongside many holes.

Tournaments:
The American Express formerly known as the Desert Classic, and for many years played as the Bob Hope Desert Classic, will once again be decided on the Pete Dye designed Stadium course at PGA West (Jan 16-19).
The Players Championship:  for the 39th time, TPC Sawgrass, another iconic Pete Dye design, will host The Players Championship for one of the richest first prizes in world golf (March 12-15).

Who's Who:
Pete Dye:  one of the greatest golf course architects of this or any generation passes away aged 94. His contribution to golf course design, and the legacy he leaves is immense.
Jack Nicklaus:  like Pete Dye a native of Ohio, actually started his golf course design career working together with Dye. In 1967 Dye asked Nicklaus to input to his design for The Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio. Two years later they worked together on the revered Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.

Sutton Coldfield Golf Club: located to the north of Birmingham, occupies a small corner of the wonderfully expansive and natural environs of Sutton Park.
