NOTE: This was the first official match played for the Walker Cup. An unofficial match between the best amateurs of Gt Britain & Ireland and the USA took place a year earlier in 1921 at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake). The USA won the encounter 9pts to 3pts.
GB&I captain Robert Harris had intended to play, but after being bitten by a large sandfly, he was replaced by Bernard Darwin (The Times golf correspondent) who was was drafted into the GB&I team. Darwin lost in his foursomes with Cyril Tolley, but won his singles match against USA captain Fownes (whose father Henry Fownes was the founder and designer of Oakmont CC).

Ryder Cup: Rome plays host to the first ever Ryder Cup to be staged in Italy, with the USA defending golf’s greatest team trophy at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club (Sept 29-Oct 1).

Céline Boutier: with many successes as both an amateur and professional golfer, Boutier added a major championship title to her impressive résumé at this year’s Evian Championship.

Alex Cejka: buffeted by rain and high winds, especially on the high-scoring final day, Čejka prevailed over Pádraig Harrington in a playoff at Royal Porthcawl, to scoop the Senior Open Championship title.
